Our Organisation

NHS England and NHS Improvement came together on 1 April 2019 as a new single organisation. The NHS Long Term Plan focuses on delivering integrated care to patients at the local level and we can best support the NHS to deliver this as a single integrated organisation.

Our new operating model represents a strong shift to regional delivery supported by expert corporate teams. Local health systems are supported by our integrated regional teams who play a major leadership role in the geographies they manage.

We are jointly committed to creating and maintaining a fair and supportive working environment and culture, where contributions are fully recognised and valued by all and staff feel empowered to carry out their duties to the best of their abilities. As employers we are committed to promoting and protecting the physical and mental health and well-being of all our staff. This underpins our values as set out in the NHS Constitution, supports us to be an Employer of Choice and ultimately enables our employees to support the effective care of our patients.

Regional Medical Examiner Officer – London
We are recruiting Regional Medical Examiner Officers (0.4 FTE) for each of the 7 NHS regions.

This exciting role will support the Regional Lead Medical Examiner (0.4 FTE), to establish and maintain a high-quality medical examiner system in the region. The Regional Medical Examiner Officer (0.4 FTE) will undertake strategic and operational planning and implementation for the Regional Lead Medical Examiner, to set up the medical examiner system within the region and ensure it operates effectively. You will probably be based in one of NHS England and NHS Improvement’s regional offices, though it may be possible to work flexibly from another office in the region.

You will work directly with local medical examiner offices and with organisations across health and social care, including primary care, secondary care, voluntary and independent sector providers, and other stakeholders.
We are working with the Department of Health and Social Care to set up the national medical examiner system. There will be 7 Regional Lead Medical Examiners, who will be consultants/ senior doctors, reporting to Dr Alan Fletcher, the National Medical Examiner. Medical examiners, supported by medical examiner officers, will provide a service to the bereaved, increasing transparency and offering the opportunity to raise concerns. They will be uniquely placed to support emerging issues with the care of those who die and to help improve practice.
